History of Louisa County

Louisa County has deep historical roots. Many of the founding fathers (and former presidents) were from this part of Virginia. In fact, that's why Virginia is sometimes referred to as the "mother of presidents," from a historical sense. Louisa County was first established back in 1742, prior to which it was part of Hanover County. The county's namesake was Princess Louisa, daughter of Queen Caroline and King George II of England.

Geography and Population

Located in the north-central part of Virginia, Louisa County is part of the "Piedmont" region of Virginia. This area of rolling hills is widely known for its natural beauty, and many people visit the area each year from elsewhere in the country. Louisa County is roughly 500 square miles in size, and within its borders you will find a mixture of farmland, forests, business and industrial centers, and plenty of residential areas.

In 2006, the population had grown to about 31,000 people. This type of "slow but steady" growth is typically good for sustaining real estate values over time.

Lake Anna (in the city by the same name) is also located in Louisa County, partially at least. This man-made lake was created in the 1970's when Virginia Power built the North Anna Power Station. It now covers around 13,000 acres and is popular among residents and tourists alike.
